Singapore has reclaimed its position as the holder of the world’s most powerful passport, according to the 2025 Henley Passport Index released this week.

The Southeast Asian city-state now offers its citizens visa-free access to 195 out of 227 destinations globally, putting it ahead of all other nations in terms of travel freedom.

Japan follows closely in second place with visa-free access to 193 destinations, buoyed by the reinstatement of visa-free entry to China following the lifting of COVID-era travel restrictions.

In joint third place are six countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Finland, and South Korea, each offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 192 destinations.

These are followed by seven European nations; Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden, occupying fourth place with access to 191 destinations.

The fifth position is shared by Belgium, New Zealand, Portugal, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, all of which offer visa-free travel to 190 destinations.

At the bottom of the index is Afghanistan, whose citizens can travel without a visa to only 26 destinations—169 fewer than Singapore, making it the least globally mobile nationality in 2025. This marks the largest recorded mobility gap in the 19-year history of the Henley Passport Index.

UAE Makes Top 10 as US and UK Slide

Notably, the United Arab Emirates has broken into the top 10 for the first time, offering visa-free access to 185 destinations. The UAE has made remarkable progress over the past decade, having added 72 destinations to its visa-free list since 2015.

In contrast, the United States and the United Kingdom have seen significant declines. Once ranked second in 2015, the US now sits in ninth place, while the UK, which held the top spot a decade ago, is now tied for fifth.

China, meanwhile, has made notable strides, climbing from 94th place in 2015 to 60th in 2025, thanks to the addition of 40 new visa-free destinations in the past ten years.

Africa Faces High Rejection Rates

While some countries celebrate gains in passport strength, others continue to face steep barriers.

African nations, in particular, are experiencing disproportionately high Schengen visa rejection rates. According to the report, applicants from Comoros, Guinea-Bissau, and Ghana are among the most frequently rejected, with African citizens reportedly twice as likely to be denied entry to the Schengen Area compared to applicants from other regions.

Call for Equitable Global Mobility

Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners—the global citizenship and residence advisory firm behind the index has called for urgent action to address growing inequalities in global mobility.

“In a world grappling with climate change, political instability, and rising displacement, mobility rights are increasingly important,” Dr. Kaelin said.

“The time has come to reimagine mobility. Initiatives like ‘Free Global Cities’ can help transform displaced individuals into active contributors to society,” he added.

The 2025 Henley Global Mobility Report highlights how deepening disparities in passport power are shaping international relations, economic opportunity, and global justice.

The data underscores the need for policies that promote inclusivity and fairness in the international travel system.

As countries work to recover from the economic and geopolitical shocks of recent years, the report suggests that passport strength and travel access may play a crucial role in shaping future prospects for citizens around the world.

The United States has halted intelligence sharing with Ukraine following Donald Trump’s suspension of military aid, delivering another significant setback to Kyiv in its ongoing war with Russia.

The decision, announced on Monday, has raised concerns over Ukraine’s ability to effectively defend itself, particularly in conducting long-range drone strikes and monitoring Russian military movements.

White House officials indicated that both the suspension of aid and the intelligence-sharing freeze could be reversed if progress is made in peace talks. However, Ukrainian officials suggest that the sudden cutoff leaves them vulnerable, particularly as they rely on US intelligence for critical information about Russian strategic bomber aircraft and missile launches. Reports suggest conflicting accounts regarding whether intelligence on Russian army activities in occupied Ukrainian territories has also been affected.

A source familiar with the situation revealed that the US has “completely stopped” intelligence sharing, affecting both Ukraine’s military and domestic security agencies. The source emphasized that this development would have a “very bad impact” on Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian aggression. The decision has sparked questions about Washington’s long-term commitment to supporting Kyiv as Trump’s administration signals a shift in its approach to the conflict.

National Security Adviser Mike Waltz stated that Trump would consider restoring military aid and intelligence-sharing if Ukraine agreed to peace negotiations and took specific confidence-building measures.

He confirmed that discussions are ongoing between Washington and Kyiv regarding the logistics of a potential peace summit. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his nightly address on Wednesday, acknowledged that there had been “positive movement” in diplomatic discussions with the US and suggested that a meeting between Ukrainian and American officials was being arranged.

Zelenskyy is now working to repair ties with the Trump administration following a tense meeting last Friday with the US president and Vice President JD Vance. During that encounter, Trump publicly reprimanded Zelenskyy and accused him of resisting diplomatic efforts to end the war. Seeking to smooth relations, Zelenskyy sent a letter to Trump on Tuesday, expressing his commitment to negotiations and his readiness to work under the US president’s “strong leadership.” In a speech to Congress later that evening, Trump acknowledged the letter and described it as “important,” while also stating that the US has received “strong signals” from Russia that it is prepared for peace. “Wouldn’t that be beautiful?” he remarked.

Waltz characterized Zelenskyy’s letter as a “good, positive first step” and noted that talks about confidence-building measures were already underway. He emphasized that if negotiations with Russia progressed, Trump would “take a hard look at lifting this pause” on military support and intelligence sharing.

However, Ukrainian commentators remain skeptical, arguing that the US has not demanded any concessions from Russia and appears willing to accept Vladimir Putin’s conditions for a settlement. Putin has called for Ukraine to cede occupied territories, reduce the size of its military, and adopt a stance of neutrality under a new government—demands that Zelenskyy has previously rejected. Last week, the Ukrainian leader reiterated that Kyiv required security guarantees before engaging in peace talks, a demand that Trump categorically dismissed.

Confirming the intelligence-sharing suspension, CIA Director John Ratcliffe told Fox News that the freeze was intended as a temporary measure. He expressed confidence that cooperation between Washington and Kyiv would eventually resume, stating, “I think we’ll work shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine as we have to push back on the aggression that’s there.”

In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson declined to comment on intelligence matters but reaffirmed that the UK would continue doing everything possible to support Ukraine. British officials suggested that the intelligence-sharing restrictions would not impact their cooperation with Kyiv, but analysts argue that Washington’s move could still have significant consequences. While Ukraine has become increasingly self-reliant in gathering intelligence through open-source data and human sources, American satellite imagery and surveillance have played a crucial role in Ukraine’s military strategy.

One Western intelligence expert suggested that the actual impact of the US restrictions would depend on the specifics of what had been cut off. They pointed out that Ukraine has already been effective in targeting Russian infrastructure, such as oil refineries, without relying heavily on American intelligence. “Donald Trump might be surprised to find that when he pulls the levers, they have little impact,” the expert said.

However, a wider intelligence-sharing blockade, including the withholding of intercepts detailing Russian military strategies, could significantly impair Ukraine’s ability to respond effectively to Russian attacks.

The effects of US intelligence support were particularly evident in February 2022, when American agencies warned Ukraine about Russia’s attempt to seize the Hostomel airport, northwest of Kyiv. The warning allowed Ukraine to reinforce its defenses, preventing Russia from securing the airstrip, which had been intended as a key entry point for troops aiming to take control of the capital. Ukrainian defense officials now worry that without continued satellite data and reconnaissance, their ability to identify and strike Russian targets with precision will be significantly hampered.

As part of his broader efforts to restore relations with Washington, Zelenskyy has proposed signing a minerals deal with the US, a move Trump has described as an economic safeguard. Trump has argued that the presence of American workers in Ukraine’s mining sector could serve as a deterrent against further Russian aggression. Meanwhile, some Ukrainian analysts believe that offering concessions to the Trump administration will not be enough to reverse the damage already done.

Prominent Ukrainian journalist Kristina Berdynskykh criticized the Trump administration’s approach, arguing that Washington is applying pressure on Ukraine while not demanding any concessions from Russia. “Now, every day, there is some bad news for Ukraine from the US. And so far, there is no bad news for Russia, but the opposite,” she wrote.

Since US and Russian diplomats began engaging in Saudi Arabia-backed peace talks, Moscow has intensified its military assaults on Ukraine’s energy grid and civilian infrastructure. In a show of force marking the third anniversary of the full-scale invasion, Russia launched a record 267 drones last month, followed by another 181 on Wednesday, along with three missiles. The latest attacks resulted in the death of a 73-year-old man in the Odesa region and extensive damage to residential buildings.

With Ukraine now facing mounting pressure from both Moscow and Washington, the path ahead remains uncertain. While the Zelenskyy administration continues diplomatic efforts to rebuild ties with the US, the suspension of military aid and intelligence sharing raises critical questions about the future of American support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

SEOUL | Xinhua | South Korean investigators with the anti-corruption investigative unit left the presidential residence after failing to arrest the impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol on Friday.

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) said the continued confrontation virtually made it impossible to execute the arrest warrant against Yoon, which was issued by a Seoul court on Tuesday.

The CIO noted that it stopped the execution at about 1:30 p.m. local time (0430 GMT) over concerns about the safety of investigators at the scene, expressing deep regret over the attitude of Yoon who refused to comply with legal procedures.

The investigative unit added that it will decide on future measures after relevant reviews.

A group of CIO prosecutors and investigators attempted to arrest the impeached president over his martial law imposition in the presidential residence in central Seoul on Friday, but after confronting the presidential security service agents, they had to stop proceeding with the arrest warrant.

Earlier, prosecutors and investigators of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) walked into a road at the main gate leading to the presidential residence in central Seoul, TV footage showed.

The investigators were reportedly confronting agents of the presidential security service, who protect Yoon at close range inside the residence.

The CIO warned earlier that if the security service blocked the arrest, it would be a crime of obstruction of justice.

The detention warrant against Yoon was issued by a Seoul court on Tuesday to question the impeached leader over his martial law imposition on the night of Dec. 3, 2024, which was revoked by the National Assembly hours later. Yoon had been named by investigative agencies as a suspected ringleader in the insurrection charges.

About 2,700 riot policemen were reportedly deployed to the residence to help proceed with the arrest warrant.

The CIO has been investigating Yoon’s martial law imposition jointly with the National Office of Investigation (NOI) and the Defence Ministry’s investigation headquarters.

The impeachment motion against Yoon was passed in the National Assembly on Dec. 14 and was delivered to the constitutional court to deliberate it for up to 180 days, during which Yoon’s power is suspended.

The Canadian government has announced sweeping changes to its immigration policies, effectively ending the pathway for international students to transition to permanent residency after completing their studies.

Marc Miller, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, unveiled the changes during an interview on Tuesday, stating that the new policies will take effect at the beginning of next year. Under the new rules, international students will be required to return to their home countries once their study visas expire, marking a significant shift in Canada’s approach to student immigration.

Speaking on the matter, Miller clarified that a study permit is distinct from a residency permit, and the two should not be conflated.

“When people come here and decide they want to be students, there are no guarantees to become permanent residents,” he said. He highlighted the importance of maintaining order and balance within Canada’s immigration system, which he noted had been facing challenges due to rising numbers of applicants.

The study permit pathway has historically been a popular route for international students, including many from Uganda and other countries, to secure permanent residency in Canada. However, the latest policy changes close off this avenue, requiring all international students to leave the country upon the expiration of their study permits.

Termination of the Student Direct Stream

In addition to this, Canada is also terminating the Student Direct Stream (SDS) program, which had been designed to fast-track study permits for students from specific countries. The SDS program’s cancellation is expected to further reduce opportunities for international students to transition into long-term residency in Canada.

Moreover, asylum claims tied to immigration pathways for students will no longer be accepted under the new rules, a move intended to tighten the system and discourage exploitation of Canada’s immigration policies.

Challenges for International Students

The decision has sparked concern among international students and prospective applicants, many of whom had viewed Canada as a favourable destination for higher education and eventual residency. The new policies are expected to impact students who have relied on this pathway to build careers and settle in Canada permanently.

Critics argue that the changes could make Canada less attractive as a destination for international education, which has been a significant contributor to the country’s economy. However, government officials maintain that the reforms are necessary to manage immigration flows and preserve the integrity of the system.

As the new policies take effect, international students will need to carefully plan their post-study options. With the permanent residency pathway now closed, many will be compelled to explore opportunities in their home countries or other destinations.

While Canada remains committed to welcoming students for educational purposes, the government’s stance is clear: a study permit is not a guarantee of permanent residency. The announcement marks a pivotal shift in Canada’s immigration landscape, with significant implications for international students worldwide.

U.S. officials are investigating the unauthorized release of top-secret documents detailing Israel’s military plans to strike Iran, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The classified documents, which assess Israel’s military movements following Iran’s ballistic missile attack on October 1, were posted on the Telegram messaging app, raising concerns about the breach.

The documents, reportedly from the U.S. Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and National Security Agency, suggest that Israel is preparing for a military response to the missile attack. Shared within the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, which includes the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, the documents have been confirmed as legitimate by one U.S. official. Three others, speaking anonymously to the Associated Press, said the U.S. is working to trace who had access to the documents before they appeared online.

The investigation is focused on determining whether the leak was intentional or the result of a hack, as well as assessing the potential compromise of other intelligence. Officials are also looking into how the documents were acquired and the broader security implications.

The documents first surfaced on Telegram, where they were attributed to an alleged insider within the U.S. intelligence community. The leak is particularly concerning given its sensitive nature, involving satellite imagery and intelligence on Israeli military preparations.

The U.S. has reportedly urged Israel to capitalize on its recent military success against Hamas and pursue a ceasefire in Gaza. Simultaneously, Washington has cautioned Israel against escalating tensions in Lebanon, which could provoke a wider conflict. Despite this, Israeli leadership has emphasized that it will not leave Iran’s missile strike unanswered.

While the Pentagon acknowledged the reports of the leak, it declined to comment further. The Israeli military has also not yet responded to requests for comment.

Notably, one of the leaked documents bears similarities to previous material from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, which had been leaked by Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira in March, relating to Russia’s war on Ukraine.

The Telegram channel responsible for posting the documents identifies itself as being based in Tehran and has previously shared pro-Iran content. This channel has also expressed support for Iran’s “Axis of Resistance,” which includes various militant groups backed by the Islamic Republic.

The United States Department of State has imposed sanctions on four senior Uganda Police Force commanders, citing their involvement in gross human rights violations, including torture and cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment.

The sanctioned individuals are Bob Kagarura, Alex Mwine, Elly Womanya, and Hamdani Twesigye

These commanders have been barred from traveling to the United States, and their immediate family members are also ineligible for entry.

The sanctions stem from credible reports of human rights abuses, documented by Ugandan civil court documents, civil society organizations, and independent journalists.

The incident that led to these sanctions was the 2020 clash between Ugandan authorities and Mityana lawmaker Francis Zaake.

Zaake was arrested for distributing food to his constituents during COVID-19 restrictions and alleged that police officers, under the command of Mwine and Kagarura, brutally assaulted him.

In recent years, Ugandan authorities have been accused of using excessive force, arbitrary arrests, and detention to silence dissenting voices [5).

The Ugandan government has yet to issue a statement on the sanctions but has previously denied involvement in human rights abuses. Senior government officials have accused the United States of meddling in Uganda’s internal affairs.

Sanctioned Individuals:

  • Bob Kagarura: Former Wamala Regional Police Commander
  • Alex Mwine: Former District Police Commander for Mityana Distric
  • Elly Womanya: Former Senior Commissioner and Deputy Director of the Criminal Investigations Division
  • Hamdani Twesigye: Former Deputy Inspector of Police assigned to the Special Investigations Unit

The sanctions aim to promote accountability for human rights violations committed in Uganda. The international community continues to monitor the situation, advocating for the protection of human rights and the rule of law in the country.

Tehran, Iran — In a heartfelt message, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, Leader of the Islamic Revolution has mourned the martyrdom of Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, following a tragic incident in Beirut on the night of September 28, 2024.

Khamenei expressed deep sorrow, offering condolences to the Iranian nation, the Islamic Ummah, and all members of the Resistance Front. Khamenei hailed Nasrallah as a towering figure of the Resistance movement, a devout scholar, and a wise political leader.

In his message, he stated that Nasrallah, who dedicated his life to the jihad against oppression and the defense of Lebanon’s Dahiya neighborhood and the oppressed people of Palestine, has now received the ultimate reward of martyrdom for his decades of service.

“The great Mujahid and standard-bearer of the Resistance in the region has ascended to the heavens. The dear Sayyid of the Resistance has received his reward for enduring countless hardships in a sacred struggle,” Khamenei said.

He added that Nasrallah was known for his steadfast commitment to defending the rights of the oppressed, particularly the Palestinian people, whose homes had been destroyed and whose families had suffered unimaginable losses. His martyrdom, Khamenei noted, will not weaken the Resistance but will instead strengthen its foundation.

He emphasized that the path of Nasrallah, much like that of Sayyid Abbas Mousavi, another martyred leader of Hezbollah, will continue to inspire future generations.

Khamenei called the atrocity by the Zionist regime futile, stating that despite Nasrallah’s martyrdom, the Resistance will continue its fight with renewed vigor. “The foul-natured Zionist regime has not become victorious by carrying out this atrocity. The Sayyid of the Resistance was not just one person. He was a path and a school of thought, and his path will continue.”

In a gesture of both grief and solidarity, Ayatollah Khamenei announced five days of public mourning in Iran. He extended condolences to Nasrallah’s family, Hezbollah, Lebanon, and the entire Resistance Front, while also congratulating them for Nasrallah’s honorable martyrdom.

Khamenei concluded his message with prayers for Nasrallah and his companions, asking for God’s blessings and peace upon all righteous servants of God.

This somber event marks a significant moment in the ongoing struggle between the Resistance Front and the Zionist regime, with Nasrallah’s legacy expected to endure far beyond his life, as Khamenei assured.

Chinese police have detained five current and former employees of pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca (AZN) for questioning regarding potential illegal activities, according to Bloomberg News.

In response, AstraZeneca issued a statement saying, “We are aware that a small number of our employees in China are under investigation, but we have no further information to share at this time.”

The individuals detained are all Chinese citizens who worked in AstraZeneca’s oncology division, where they marketed cancer drugs, Bloomberg reported.

One of the investigations reportedly involves AstraZeneca’s collection of patient data and whether it violated China’s data privacy laws.
