The National Coordinator for Games and Sports under the Office of the National Chairman – NRM (ONC), Mr. Seth Murari, has donated 200 kits towards the upcoming General MK Run, an initiative organised as part of activities commemorating the birthday of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

The donation, made on behalf of the ONC, was officially handed over on Thursday and is expected to enhance preparations for the high-profile sporting event, which is drawing national attention and widespread participation.

Speaking during the handover, Mr. Murari reiterated ONC’s commitment to promoting physical wellness and community participation in line with Gen. Muhoozi’s vision of a healthier, more active Ugandan society.

“This donation is a demonstration of our continued support for initiatives that not only honour our leaders but also bring communities together through sport,” he said. “We believe that sports play a vital role in national unity, fitness, and youth empowerment.”

The General MK Run, which has become an annual feature on Uganda’s sporting calendar, is expected to attract thousands of runners from across the country.

Proceeds from the event will be channelled into various charitable causes, in keeping with the philanthropic spirit associated with Gen. Muhoozi’s birthday celebrations.

The ONC’s involvement, observers say, adds both visibility and logistical support to the initiative, reaffirming the office’s role in facilitating civic activities across different sectors, including sports.

Preparations for the event are in their final stages, with organisers urging the public to register early and participate in what promises to be a unifying and impactful occasion.

Uganda’s Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo has been granted authorization by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host a series of elite continental football tournaments, solidifying its status as a premier sporting venue in Africa.

Less than a year after its grand opening on June 1, 2024, the state-of-the-art facility has secured the green light to stage high-profile competitions, including qualifiers and finals for the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON), men’s U17, U20, and U23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, as well as the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

In an official statement, CAF praised the stadium for its “invaluable contribution to elevating the quality of African football.” This recognition adds to the stadium’s growing list of accolades.

In October 2024, FIFA certified its playing surface, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino personally presenting the certification. Earlier this year, the stadium was also nominated for a prestigious Global Award, recognizing it among the world’s top sports venues.

Rogers Mulindwa, Chairman of the Hamz Stadium Management Committee, credited the milestone to the unwavering support of Uganda’s government and sports leadership.

He acknowledged President Yoweri Museveni, Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataaha Museveni, State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang, and FUFA President Moses Magogo for their instrumental roles in the stadium’s journey.

“This achievement is a testament to Uganda’s collective vision for excellence in sports,” Mulindwa stated. “We are committed to maintaining world-class standards as we host these prestigious tournaments, not only showcasing our stadium but also the passion and talent of Ugandan and African football.”

CAF’s approval is expected to enhance Uganda’s stature on the continental stage, drawing international fans, fostering the growth of local talent, and boosting sports tourism.

With its cutting-edge infrastructure and rapid ascent to global prominence, Hamz Stadium-Nakivubo is poised to become a beacon of African football ambition and a symbol of Uganda’s rising influence in the sport.

In a tightly contested FUFA Big League West Nile derby on Sunday, Paidha Black Angels FC (PBA) and Calvary FC played to a goalless draw at Bar Okoro Stadium.

The intense match showcased spirited performances from both sides, but neither could find the back of the net.

PBA’s Efforts Fall Short at Home

Paidha Black Angels FC, a Zombo-based club with a passionate fan base, put up a determined fight in front of their supporters. Despite creating multiple chances, the team struggled to convert opportunities into goals.

Speaking after the match, Tasha Giramia, PBA’s Public Relations Officer, acknowledged the team’s dominance but lamented missed opportunities.

“We were more dominant, but their defensive side was very strong,” she said. “Our strikers found it difficult to break through their defence.”

Giramia also praised the fans for their unwavering support, emphasising the club’s resilience despite recent management challenges.

PBA, currently under the leadership of fans and local business stakeholders, is hopeful about installing a new management team to steer the club towards future success.

Calvary FC Celebrates Resilience

For Yumbe-based Calvary FC, the draw was seen as a hard-earned result. The team’s defensive discipline frustrated PBA’s attacking efforts and kept the home side from securing three points.

Simon Otim, head coach of Calvary FC, commended his players for their effort throughout the match.

“We had come to pick maximum points, but this will help us focus on the second leg,” Otim stated.

Calvary FC, who finished the first round among the top four teams alongside Bumba Saints and others, remains focused on maintaining their strong position as the league enters its second round.

Looking Ahead

As Paidha Black Angels FC reflects on their performance, they face the challenge of rebuilding under fan-led management.

The club’s supporters and local businesses have rallied to keep operations running after the departure of their chairman.

For Calvary FC, the draw is a confidence boost as they prepare for the second leg of the FUFA Big League.

With aspirations to stay among the league’s top contenders, their solid defensive performance in the derby is a promising sign.

The West Nile derby proved to be a testament to the competitive spirit and growing intensity of FUFA Big League football in the region. Fans from both sides left the stadium with high expectations for the remainder of the season.

Fans of Paidha Black Angels FC, a club based in Zombo District, have relieved their Chairman, Robert Jakony, from his duties following three consecutive losses in the 2024 FUFA Big League competition.

The club suffered defeats in all away matches during the festive season, losing 2-1 to Arua Hill in Gulu City, 2-0 to Blacks Power FC in Lira City, and 1-0 to Kaaro Karungi FC in Ntungamo District.

Paidha Black Angels FC recently returned to the FUFA Big League after becoming champions of the Northern Region, defeating several clubs. However, their performance in the league’s first leg has been dismal, raising concerns among fans and stakeholders.

Fans Take Action

The series of losses sparked outrage within the community, leading to a series of meetings involving stakeholders, including the Zombo District business community. The stakeholders attributed the poor performance to what they described as mismanagement under Jakony’s leadership.

A decisive meeting held on December 28, 2024, at Daudi Courts Hotel in Paidha Town Council resolved to remove Jakony and his management. Fans and stakeholders agreed to establish an interim leadership to steer the club forward.

A letter dated December 28, 2024, and titled “Formal Disclaimer Against Mr. Jakony Robert,” stated:

“PBA is now under the control of the Elders Forum and Business Community, with fans at the forefront.”

The letter also noted that this arrangement would remain in place until January 20, 2025, when a new administration would officially take over the club’s management.

Jakony’s Response

In response to the developments, Jakony dismissed the move as malicious and defaming, accusing certain individuals of sabotaging football progress in Zombo District and the greater Northern Uganda region.

“I remain the legal chairman of PBA, despite the notice from the business community and Elders Forum. We are preparing for our next home game on January 5, 2025, against Kigezi Home Boys,” he stated.

Jakony called for calm among players and fans, emphasizing the need for unity and strategic planning to return the club to the Uganda Premier League.

“We are facing a crisis that requires a collective solution. It’s not necessarily due to poor leadership,” he added.

Analysts Weigh In

Sports analysts in greater Nebbi remarked that while the team’s performance could improve, the issue lies more with management strategy. They noted that Jakony is a capable football manager but suggested that he collaborate with professional administrators to address financial and organizational challenges.

Club Ownership and Leadership

Paidha Black Angels FC is fan-owned, with management accountable to its supporters, who include businesspersons, farmers, religious leaders, and politicians.

Contact persons for the interim leadership include:

  • Francis (Fans Chairman) – Tel: 0771178761
  • Ovoya Michael – Tel: 0772913231
  • Ogombo – Tel: 0782884608

As the club navigates this transitional period, fans and stakeholders hope for better management and performance in the league.
