Uganda today concludes the village-level phase of its Special Interest Groups (SIGs) elections with the nationwide Youth Committee vote, marking a critical milestone on the Electoral Commission’s 2025/26 General Elections Roadmap.

Polling began at 9:00 am across the country and is expected to close at 4:00 pm, as eligible voters aged 18 to 30—whose names appear on the SIG Youth Register—cast ballots to choose their local youth representatives.

This election follows the successful and largely peaceful voting exercises for Older Persons on June 16 and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) on June 17, according to the Electoral Commission (EC).

“This is a crucial moment for young people to step up, show up, and shape the future of our nation,” said EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, in a statement encouraging youth to participate actively and responsibly in the democratic process.

“Older Persons and PWD elections were peaceful with no major incidents. Youth, let’s keep calm during your village elections. Line up, vote, and promote unity,” Justice Byabakama added.

Zero Tolerance for Vigilantism

Amid rising political mobilisation across the country, Justice Byabakama issued a stern warning against the formation of illegal groups purporting to “guard votes,” saying such vigilante structures are “illegal and risky.”

“Forming vigilante groups like youth brigades is illegal. The Uganda Police Force is mandated to provide security during elections. Let’s avoid actions that cause tension,” he cautioned.

EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi while addresing the media

The EC reiterated that any form of violence, inflammatory speech, or misinformation—including fake news circulated online—will not be tolerated.

High Stakes for Youth Representation

Today’s Youth Elections are widely seen as pivotal in setting the tone for youth engagement in national politics, especially ahead of the 2026 general elections. With Uganda’s population being one of the youngest in the world, the influence of the youth vote is expected to be both significant and transformative.

In previous SIG elections, youth representation has been instrumental in surfacing grassroots concerns, particularly in areas such as employment, education, and access to public services. The ongoing vote is expected to elect thousands of youth leaders across villages, who will eventually feed into higher structures at parish, sub-county, district, and national levels.

The EC, under the 2025/26 roadmap, has prioritised inclusivity and civic participation across all Special Interest Groups. The Commission praised the active role played by cultural institutions, local councils, and civil society in mobilising voters during the earlier SIG elections.

Call for Calm and Patriotism

In a closing appeal, the Commission urged voters and candidates alike to uphold a spirit of peace, unity, and patriotism.

“Let the youth be the example. Peaceful elections today reflect our country’s maturity and commitment to inclusive governance,” Justice Byabakama noted.

Security remains tight at polling venues, with the Uganda Police Force and allied agencies deployed to ensure safety and compliance with electoral guidelines.

As Uganda wraps up the SIG village-level elections, attention will shift to the upcoming electoral stages—especially at the parish and district levels—where newly elected representatives are expected to continue advocating for the needs and voices of their constituencies.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the conclusion of the nationwide Display of the National Voters’ Register, a critical phase in preparations for the 2025/2026 General Elections.

In a press statement released Thursday, the EC confirmed that the display exercise, which began on April 25, 2025, has officially ended in the majority of polling stations across the country.

However, for 620 polling stations where the exercise started late due to technical issues during register production, the display will continue until May 20 to complete the mandatory 21-day period.

The Commission had also designated April 25 to May 8 as the display period for Voters’ Registers of Special Interest Groups (SIGs), including the Youth, Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), and Older Persons, at the village level. That process, too, has concluded.

No Extension of Display Exercise

“There shall be no extension of the Display exercise,” the EC clarified, emphasizing the statutory nature of the display period.

The purpose of the display was to allow voters to verify their details on the register and raise objections regarding inaccuracies or ineligible entries.

Voters were encouraged to report cases involving deceased persons, individuals below 18 years of age, those registered outside their place of origin or residence, and cases of multiple entries.

New Phase: Display of Recommended Deletions and Inclusions

Following the end of the general display, the EC will now embark on the next phase—displaying lists of persons recommended for deletion or inclusion by the Parish or Ward Tribunal. This exercise will run from May 16 to May 26, 2025, at the respective Parish/Ward Headquarters.

“The purpose of this exercise is to enable any person who may have been wrongly recommended for deletion to object to the Parish/Ward Tribunal,” the statement reads.

The Parish/Ward Tribunal, appointed by a local magistrate, is composed of two elders (one male and one female, aged 60 and above) and three members appointed in consultation with political parties active in the area.

Role of the Tribunal

The Tribunal will have the final say on all objections and recommendations made during the display exercise. After this process, the Electoral Commission will consolidate the feedback, make the necessary updates, and produce the final National Voters’ Register.

This register will be used for the first round of the General Elections, starting with the elections of Special Interest Groups’ (SIGs) committees—Youth, PWDs, and Older Persons—in June 2025.

Voter Verification Still Accessible Online

The EC has also reminded the public that voters can continue to verify their registration details via the Commission’s website at https://ec.or.ug/register.

Public Support Appreciated

The Commission appreciated various stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations, and local leaders, for mobilising public participation in the display exercise.

“All complaints arising from the Display Exercise shall be addressed to the Returning Officers of the respective Electoral Districts,” the EC stated, adding that these will be handled by Article 61(1)(f) of the Constitution and Section 15 of the Electoral Commission Act, Cap 140.

As Uganda prepares for the 2025/2026 General Elections, the EC continues to call on all stakeholders to remain actively engaged in the electoral process.

The Ministry of Works and Transport has launched the third phase of the Digital Registration Number Plates initiative, targeting vehicles entering Uganda for the first time.

This phase will be implemented at the Malaba and Mutukula border entry points.

According to the Ministry, vehicle owners in this category will now have access to digital registration plates at a cost of Shs714,300.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernise Uganda’s motor vehicle registration process and enhance road safety.

How to Apply for Digital Registration Plates

The process varies depending on the route taken by vehicle owners to clear taxes:

Vehicles Clearing Taxes Directly at Mombasa or Dar es Salaam Ports

Vehicle owners in this category benefit from a streamlined process. After clearing taxes at these ports, vehicles will enter Uganda already fitted with digital number plates and accompanied by a logbook.

Owners must log into the ministry’s booking system immediately after taxes are cleared to confirm their registration.

Vehicles Cleared from Bonded Warehouses in Uganda

For vehicles cleared from bonded warehouses, owners must complete all tax assessments via the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) portal.

This includes verification by the Motor Vehicle Registration Department under the Ministry of Works and Transport.

Once taxes and assessments are confirmed, clients can select a preferred location and time for the installation of the digital number plates.

The Ministry has assured vehicle owners that the service will be made convenient by bringing the fitment of registration plates to the chosen locations.

The rollout of digital number plates is part of the government’s broader initiative to enhance road safety, improve vehicle tracking, and streamline the registration process.

The Ministry encourages vehicle owners to comply promptly to benefit from these advancements.

The AfricanCEO Magazine has unveiled its much-anticipated Top 100 CEOs in Africa for 2024, a comprehensive ranking that celebrates the best-performing business leaders on the continent.

This year’s list highlights CEOs who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, delivering financial growth while addressing pressing social and environmental issues.

Challenges of the CEO Role in Africa

The position of a CEO is both demanding and precarious. According to AfricanCEO’s analysis, nearly 25% of CEO departures in Africa from 2020 to 2024 were involuntary, resulting in significant losses in shareholder value.

Such high stakes emphasize the complexity of identifying and nurturing effective leaders who can meet the challenges of the C-suite.

While critics often accuse business leaders of focusing on short-term gains, the AfricanCEO ranking identifies those who excel by taking the long view, balancing shareholder returns with sustainability and governance practices.

The 2024 Ranking Criteria

This year’s list is the culmination of an extensive evaluation process that goes beyond quarterly or annual performance metrics. The ranking primarily assesses:

  1. Long-Term Financial Returns (80%):
    • Total shareholder return.
    • Market capitalisation growth over the CEO’s tenure.
  2. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Performance (20%):
    • Sustainability practices, derived from company ESG reports.
    • Social and environmental initiatives integrated into corporate strategy.

The rankings focus on CEOs who assumed their roles before 2020, ensuring a robust analysis of long-term performance. However, some recent appointees with remarkable results since 2020 have also been included.

Key Insights from the 2024 List

Representation and Diversity

The list features CEOs from 18 African countries, representing a diverse range of industries and cultures.

Notably, women constitute 15% of the top performers, signalling a significant, albeit gradual, shift towards gender diversity in corporate leadership.

Regional Trends

  • Nigeria leads the pack, with the most CEOs featured on the list. This dominance is attributed to the availability of comprehensive data on Nigerian business leaders, coupled with their longer average tenure compared to peers in other regions.
  • Kenya and South Africa follow closely, with accessible information on CEO qualifications, tenure, and governance practices aiding their representation.
  • Francophone Africa, while home to capable leaders, remains underrepresented due to challenges in accessing consistent and detailed data on its CEOs.

Industry and Governance Standards

CEOs of companies listed on stock exchanges dominate the rankings. Publicly traded firms are held to higher standards of corporate governance, financial reporting, and sustainability, making their CEOs more likely to meet the rigorous criteria of the ranking.

A Shift Towards ESG Accountability

The integration of ESG metrics into the ranking reflects a growing awareness that social and environmental issues directly impact long-term financial success.

“The business of business is no longer just business,” said Peter SaSellu, publisher and editor of AfricanCEO Magazine. “We’re in an era where investors, employees, and consumers expect companies to prioritise sustainability alongside profitability.”

Nigerian CEOs Shine Brightest

Nigerian CEOs secured the top spots on the list, aided by their consistent performance and the availability of comprehensive data.

Their companies’ ability to deliver strong financial returns while demonstrating ESG leadership contributed to their success.

Kenyan and South African CEOs also performed strongly, representing sectors such as finance, technology, and manufacturing, where corporate governance and ESG considerations have become integral.

Challenges in Francophone Africa

Tracking CEO performance in Francophone Africa remains a challenge. CEOs in these regions often transition between countries, complicating the evaluation of their long-term impact. Efforts are underway to improve data collection and reporting standards across the continent.

Promoting Leadership Excellence Across Africa

The AfricanCEO Magazine’s Top 100 initiative is more than just a ranking; it’s a call to action for greater transparency and accountability in African businesses. By profiling these exceptional leaders, the magazine aims to foster dialogue on leadership, sustainability, and growth, inspiring the next generation of CEOs.

Looking Ahead

As the business landscape evolves, so will the criteria for evaluating leadership. The inclusion of ESG metrics in this year’s ranking underscores the growing importance of sustainability in corporate strategy.

Future rankings will continue to refine this balance, recognizing leaders who deliver value for shareholders while contributing to a more sustainable and equitable Africa.

About the AfricanCEO Magazine’s Top 100 CEOs List

For most of us, coffee is an essential part of our daily routine. It is one of the most traded commodities and is the second most consumed beverage in the world. With countless varieties available, choosing the finest and most premium blend can be a daunting task.

The 7 Most Expensive Coffees in the World

Our list of the world’s most expensive coffees showcases some of the finest and most unique coffees from around the globe. From rare coffee beans crafted with the aid of elephants to blends roasted by century-old artisans, these coffees redefine the standards of excellence in every cup.

Black Ivory: $2,500 per kilogram

“Black Ivory” coffee is the most expensive coffee in the world, surpassing even “Kopi Luwak” in exclusivity and price. Produced in Anantara resorts in the Maldives and Thailand, this rare coffee involves nearly 30 elephants consuming Thai Arabica coffee beans.

After undergoing a natural fermentation process in the elephants’ digestive system, the beans produce a coffee with reduced bitterness and a smooth, chocolatey flavour, with hints of red berries offering a unique taste.

The coffee production process is costly, with elephants consuming about 35 kilos of coffee cherries to yield just under a kilo of coffee beans. However, it’s not just about taste, proceeds from sales support the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, supporting the majestic animals and their caretakers.

With a limited availability of approximately 225 kg per year, Black Ivory Coffee is reserved for a select clientele, highlighting the brand’s commitment to quality and exclusivity.

Misha Coffee – $1,500 per kilogram

This exceptional variety surpasses the traditional Misha Life Bosque blend, thanks to a unique natural process involving local Coatis.

These native animals, skilled at selecting ripe coffee cherries, contribute to the beans’ distinct profile through their digestive process, imparting additional fruity notes. Located in the Andean Mountains’ high altitudes, the coffee unfolds flavours of deep chocolate, almond, and subtle citrus undertones.

Similar to “Kopi Luwak” or “Black Ivory,” the coffee cherries are eaten by the Coatis and partially digested before being eliminated. Inside the stomach, the beans mix with previously consumed fruits like pineapples or papayas, influencing the coffee’s flavour profile. The collected droppings are roasted at nearly 220 degrees to ensure cleanliness before processing.

Kopi Luwak – $1,300 per kilogram

Originating from Indonesia, these beans are renowned as one of the world’s most expensive and exquisite varieties of coffee. To craft this coffee, the beans undergo a unique process. They are fed to civets, small mongoose-like mammals found in the tropical forests of Asia and Africa, and then harvested from their droppings.

As the civets digest the beans, they ferment, resulting in an unmistakable flavour profile. Known for its strong earthy tones and musty aroma, Kopi Luwak often exhibits hints of caramel, chocolate, and nutty flavours. This intricately nuanced coffee attracts numerous visitors to Indonesia each year, seeking to better understand its production process.

Ospina Coffee: Dynasty Gran Café, Premier Grand Cru – $1250 per kilogram

The Ospina name carries a legacy of excellence in Colombian coffee for over 185 years. Grown in the lush highland microclimates of Colombia’s Andean mountains, Ospina Coffee cherries benefit from volcanic soil, ample rainfall, and abundant sunshine. Hand-picked at peak ripeness, they undergo a specialised “bird-friendly wet milling” process to preserve their inherent qualities.

Sun-dried and carefully rested, these beans yield Ospina’s trademark sweet, balanced cup. Exclusive use of the rare Arabica Typica variety, known as the “Champagne of coffee,” ensures intricate flavours and a velvety body. With less than 1% of global Arabica production, Ospina’s beans are exceptionally precious and undergo over 20 quality control checks to maintain their uncompromising standards which makes their coffee some of the most expensive in the world.

Finca El Injerto – $1,100 per kilogram

Finca El Injerto commands prices starting at $1,100/kg due to its exceptional quality and award-winning status. Grown in Guatemala, this coffee undergoes a unique washing process to enhance grain quality, contributing to its rich, full-bodied profile with a creamy texture and sweet, smooth taste reminiscent of dark chocolate. It also features notes of tea, rose, tamarind, coconut, and sweet fruits, offering a distinctive flavour profile.

As the first carbon-neutral certified coffee farm in Guatemala, El Injerto, managed by the Aguirre family, prioritises sustainable practices and social responsibility. Thanks to its mineral-rich non-volcanic soil and high-altitude location, El Injerto coffees authentically reflect the terrain of Guatemala which distinguishes them from their imitations and dupes.

Saint Helena – $870 per kilogram

The history of this coffee traces back to 1733 when the East India Company transported coffee seeds from Yemen’s port of Mocha to the volcanic island of St. Helena, located approximately 1900 km from the African mainland. The island’s mild climate and volcanic soil provided ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Known for being Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile, the island’s limited size and tough accessibility contribute to the rarity and expensive nature of St. Helena coffee.

Cultivation and processing are exclusively done by hand, following organic principles. Described as the world’s best coffee in 1839, production ceased in the late 19th century due to changing market demands. However, it resumed in 1994 under David Henry’s initiative, and later, a joint venture revived production in 2010. St. Helena coffee offers subtle flavours of hazelnut, chocolate, and almond, with mild acidity.

Hacienda La Esmeralda – $560 per kilogram

Hacienda La Esmeralda, a family-owned business in Panama’s southwest highlands, produces award-winning specialty coffee, including its high-altitude Geisha variety. Since 2007, the Petersons have achieved record prices through private online auctions, showcasing their commitment to quality and taste.

Grown under guava trees on Mount Baru, the beans have earned numerous accolades, contributing to their impressive price tag. With flavours of peach, vanilla, lavender, and honey, Hacienda La Esmeralda offers a uniquely rich and sweet cup with strong acidity.

The world of expensive coffees is as diverse as it is dynamic, with offerings from various corners of the globe. Unlike wine, coffee’s shelf life is limited, requiring timely consumption to savour its unique flavours.

Involving unique cultivation methods, meticulous processing techniques, and exquisite flavour profiles, exploring these exquisite brews promises an ever-evolving journey of luxury and taste, offering a sensory experience unlike any other.

In a bid to address mounting tensions within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party over the contentious Coffee Amendment Bill, President Yoweri Museveni has summoned NRM Members of Parliament for a caucus meeting on Friday at his Kisozi Country Farm in Gomba District.

The bill, which proposes merging the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) with the Ministry of Agriculture, has sparked a fierce debate in Parliament, particularly with opposition from the Buganda Caucus and Kingdom.

According to an invitation letter from Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua, who also chairs the NRM Caucus, MPs are expected to gather at the Kisozi farm at 9:30 a.m. on November 1.

The letter specifies that the agenda of the meeting remains undisclosed, but MPs have been instructed to bring suitable footwear for anticipated farm tours, hinting at a likely discussion on coffee and agricultural policies.

Brewing Coffee Controversy

The proposed Coffee Amendment Bill has drawn strong opposition from both MPs and stakeholders in the Buganda Kingdom, who argue that dissolving UCDA would have severe repercussions on Uganda’s coffee industry and impact millions reliant on coffee for their livelihoods.

Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Peter Mayiga warned that eliminating UCDA could “punish the Baganda,” noting that coffee production remains a vital economic pillar for the region.

Proponents of the bill argue that integrating UCDA’s functions with the Ministry of Agriculture is part of an ongoing rationalisation effort aimed at reducing redundancy in government agencies.

This rationalisation process, initiated in February 2021, is intended to streamline government expenditures and improve service delivery by curbing overlapping roles.

The government maintains that the bill aligns with its mission to optimise agricultural productivity.

Museveni’s Remarks on Coffee Development

President Museveni, speaking over the weekend, expressed his dissatisfaction with claims that UCDA alone had transformed Uganda’s coffee sector.

Instead, he attributed much of the success to wider government programmes such as Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) and the Parish Development Model (PDM), which he credits with pulling Ugandans into the money economy.

“If UCDA and NAADS were successful, why were 68% of homesteads still outside the money economy by 2013?” Museveni said, pointing to OWC’s significant contributions compared to other agencies.

Political Implications for NRM

The Buganda Caucus has pledged to continue its resistance to the bill, foreshadowing a potentially prolonged political standoff that could have lasting implications for the ruling NRM party ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Some MPs have warned that alienating coffee farmers in Buganda could impact the party’s support in the region, particularly if their livelihoods are perceived to be at risk.

As President Museveni prepares to meet with NRM MPs on Friday, the coffee sector will likely take centre stage, underscoring the importance of agriculture in Uganda’s political landscape.

Observers are watching closely to see if the meeting will yield any compromises or resolutions on the Coffee Amendment Bill, as both sides remain firm in their positions.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among has given the Commissioners of the House a two-week deadline to deliver a detailed report on the status of the new parliamentary chambers, which are still under construction.

This directive came during a plenary session on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, after Kassanda North MP, Patrick Oshabe, raised concerns about the delayed project.

Oshabe, speaking on a matter of national importance, urged the House to seek updates on the progress of the chambers, which have been long overdue.

“As MPs, we deserve to know the state of the new chambers,” Oshabe emphasized. In response, Speaker Among promptly tasked the Commissioners with preparing and submitting the report within two weeks. “Commissioners, we need a report in two weeks,” she stated.

The Commissioners of the Eleventh Parliament, as of July 2021, include Speaker Among (Chairperson), Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, and Finance Minister Matia Kasaija.

Also on the commission are backbenchers Solomon Silwany, Esther Afoyochan, Prossy Mbabazi Akampurira, and Joel Ssenyonyi. The Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige Kasaija, serves as Secretary.

The construction of the new parliamentary chambers, overseen by Roko Construction Company LTD, started in July 2017 with a budget of UGX 206 billion.

Initially, the project was scheduled for completion in July 2020 but has faced numerous delays, causing frustration among MPs.

Once finished, the new chambers will offer seating for 600 MPs, a massive upgrade from the current 100, easing space constraints.

The nine-story building will also feature a modern museum, an archiving facility, a gallery, and additional office spaces.

The existing chambers, built-in 1956 during the colonial period, were designed to accommodate just 88 MPs. Today, Parliament has 559 MPs and over 450 staff, all grappling with limited office space, prompting the construction of the new facility to address the pressing need for more room.

Pakwach: A man believed to be in his 20s is feared dead after a boat they were sailing in capsized on Albert Nile in Pakwach district.

The Tuesday, September 10 evening incident occurred after a strong wind blew off a narrow, wooden fishing vessel carrying two men, at  Akero landing site, in Ragem Lower Parish, Ragem Sub-county.

Witnesses told this Publication that the two residents of Olyeju village,  Ragem Lower Parish,  Ragem Sub-County had gone on an evening fishing spree.

An area resident only identified as Peter said “Out of the two, one person was rescued by fishermen but the other one who failed to swim couldn’t be saved.”

Ocan Ngoz Richard, the LCIII Chairperson of Ragem Sub County confirmed the harrowing incident, attributing it to heavy downpours and strong winds.

“It indeed happened, the body has not been retrieved up to now,” Ocan told this Publication.

He added that “the rain came with a very strong wind. The wind was too much and that is what caused the incident. When the boat capsized, they tried swimming but the one who died didn’t know how to swim well”

The identity of the missing person was not clear by press time.

Yoacel Francis, a resident of Akero landing site revealed that a joint search for the missing person has been intensified by fishermen, locals and security personnel.

Last year cases of death by drowning were recorded on landing sites in the Sub- Counties of  Panyimur, Pakwach,  Wadelai and Ragem in Pakwach District.
